(370) Aizu in Ueno (2)


In the rest of Japan these dolls are called “Daruma” but in Aizu there is a local version called “Okiagari-koboshi” (起き上がり小法師) i.e. “little priest that gets up”. The idea is the same (you knock it over and it returns upright) and so is the symbolism.
