(589) With a small piece of fabric

Even though a few years back I’d stayed for a month in Asakusabashi, I hadn’t noticed this wonderful little shop called “Tsumami-do”

As the name suggests they specialize in “tsumami-kanzashi” (つまみ簪) the flowers made of fabric used for hair decoration mostly by geisha but also from any woman making her hair in the classic style (nihon-gami /日本髪).

The whole thing is done by taking tiny squares of colored fabric, folding them in the same way they do with origami but using pliers and gluing them to keep their shape –the results are incredible!

(For a bigger version of this picture both in color and black and white, check my "Japan Arekore" set on Flickr)
