(634) Who needs a diamond ring?

They are called “yuuinou-hin” (結納品) i.e. “engagement gifts” and as expected each has its own symbolism; generally speaking they are talismans for good fortune, health, longevity etc. They are basically made of good quality paper, white and red (the colors of 11th century Minamoto and Taira houses) and of a special thin cord also made of twisted paper called “mizuhiki” (水引).
