...Zenkoji (善光寺), on the road Omotesando (表参道) -hence the lantern- a PR center for the armed forces that Japan doesn't officially have, also known as Jieitai (自衛隊). Oh, and for those who when they hear "Omotesando" they think the Omotesando in Tokyo, the word means any road leading to the front entrance of a temple/shrine --in Tokyo it is of course Meiji Jingu.

...Ζενκότζι (善光寺) πάνω στον δρόμο Ομοτεσάντο (表参道) -εξού και το φαναράκι- ένα κέντρο δημοσίων σχέσεων για τις ένοπλες δυνάμεις που επίσημα δεν έχει η Ιαπωνία, γνωστές και ως Τζιεϊτάι (自衛隊). Α, και για όσους με το "Ομοτεσάντο" σκέφτονται το Ομοτεσάντο του Τόκιο, η λέξη αυτή σημαίνει κάθε δρόμο που οδηγεί στην μπροστινή είσοδο ενός ναού --στο Τόκιο πρόκειται βεβαίως για το Μέιτζι Τζίνγκου.

Yesterday in southeast Asakusa, in the fourth compartment of the Kotobuki neighborhood (寿四): at first we thought it was some small local matsuri from the ones that precede Aaskusa's Sanja Matsuri but we saw that the omikoshi was not carried by people but by a truck. And as they told us (and we later saw ourselves) they were welcoming it as it was returning from the Miyamoto Unosuke workshop (宮本卯之助) that has been making and repairing omikoshi in Asakusa since 1861, where they had sent it for renovation in preparation for Sanja Matsuri. Ten years in Asakusa, this was the first time I saw something like that and I couldn't not post it!

Εχτές στη νοτιοανατολική Ασακούσα, στο τέταρτο διαμέρισμα τμήμα της γειτονιάς Κοτομπούκι (寿四): στην αρχή νομίσαμε ότι ήταν κάποιο μικρό τοπικό ματσούρι από αυτά που προηγούνται του Σάντζα Ματσούρι της Ασακούσα όμως είδαμε ότι το ομικόσι δεν το κουβαλούσαν άνθρωποι αλλά φορτηγάκι. Και όπως μας είπαν (και μετά είδαμε και με τα μάτια μας) το υποδέχονταν καθώς επέστρεφε από το εργαστήριο Μιγιαμότο Ουνοσούκε (宮本卯之助), το οποίο φτιάχνει και επισκευάζει ομικόσι στην Ασακούσα από το 1861, όπου το είχαν στείλει για ανακαίνιση ενόψει του Σάντζα Ματσούρι. Δέκα χρόνια στην Ασακούσα, πρώτη φορά είδα κάτι τέτοιο και δεν άντεξα να μην το ποστάρω!

...perhaps the most unusual name I have seen in a super-market in Japan. Especially considering that the Japanese don't eat tomatoes that much.

...ίσως η πιο ασυνήθιστη ονομασία για σούπερ-μάρκετ που έχω δει στην Ιαπωνία. Ειδικά λαμβάνοντας υπόψη ότι οι Ιάπωνες δεν τρώνε ιδιαίτερα ντομάτες.

In front of Nakano Station's western entrance there is the statue of an Indian woman called in Japanese Nyoze Hime (如是姫/princess Nyoze). She is here to offer flowers to Amida Buddha who cured her when she was sick; the legend is connected to Zenkoji (善行寺) temple that is one of Nagano's sights and one of Japan's most important temples.

Μπροστά από τη δυτική είσοδο του σταθμού του Ναγκάνο βρίσκεται ένα άγαλμα μιας ινδής που στα ιαπωνικά λέγεται Νιόζε Χίμε (如是姫/πριγκίπισσα Νιόζε). Βρίσκεται εδώ για να προσφέρει λουλούδια στον Βούδα Αμίντα ο οποίος τη γιάτρεψε όταν ήταν άρρωστη --ο θρύλος σχετίζεται με τον ναό Ζενκότζι (善行寺) ο οποίος είναι ένα από τα αξιοθέατα του Ναγκάνο και ένας από τους σημαντικότερους ναούς της Ιαπωνίας.

...a hostel with a catchy name --yes, these things aren't only done in Tokyo and Kyoto and besides Nagano had a a lot of Western tourists, I assume because of the winter sports.
